We don’t want to respond just after the fact when something happens out on the road (yes, it is important to address), but we want to see those patterns beforehand. She adds, “We all are trying to make sure our drivers get home safely and keep the motoring public safe. This is why I felt like it was important for other people to hear what we are doing since this is an objective that everyone in the trucking industry shares.”

Some of the communication techniques that BHS implements to stay on top of risk assessment include quarterly safety meetings, a monthly driver all call, transparency with performance metrics and recognition and incentives to reinforce positive safety behaviors.

It is imperative for BHS to make sure drivers are seeing important messaging while out on the road. When safety situations arise, messaging is shared with their drivers to be mindful of that could impact their driving route. All important messages that need to go out to the fleet are shared via a private Facebook group, an email distribution list, and via a phone call.

In addition, the fleet managers in the BHS division play an important role in the communication process. After recognizing that the fleet manager (or driver manager) knows the driver better than anyone else, BHS identified that communication around safety could become part of a normal conversation between a driver and their fleet manager.

There is now full transparency between the fleet managers and their driver’s safety. When there is this type of communication and collaboration, they are better equipped to identify gaps and communicate risks. Also, BHS makes a point to encourage open communication between drivers and their management team.

The week began with nine Bennett drivers going to Columbia Falls, Maine to pick up wreaths from the Worcester Wreath Company, the founders of the Wreaths Across America organization. They joined truckers who delivered more than 2.2. million wreaths to 2,175 participating locations throughout the country, all committed to the mission to Remember, Honor and Teach.

After arriving at Bennett’s Home Office headquarters in McDonough, Georgia, the Bennett drivers, Lars Searle and Stephanie Hanwell, Mikkel Forney, Chris and Brandi Clark, David and Sharon Briggs and Stewart and Melody Anderson were celebrated by executives at the Rolling Ambassador Honor Breakfast.

Following the breakfast, employees gathered in the company’s shop to celebrate with a Convoy Rally that featured the JROTC color guard and the Mustangs band from Ola High School, playing our National Anthem. In addition, each driver received a commemorative medal to recognize their service as volunteers. David Pittman, President and CFO of the Bennett Family of Companies and his father, David Pittman Sr., were recognized as Honorary Rolling Ambassadors and also presented with commemorative medals.

Following the rally, there was a small ceremony held outside to reveal the specially wrapped trailer dedicated to honor the 13 service members that tragically lost their lives in Afghanistan on August 26, 2021.  Bennett extended invitations to all of the families that lost their loved ones in Afghanistan. The family of Marine Corporal Humberto “Bert” Sanchez attended the Rolling Ambassador Honor Breakfast and the Convoy Rally to honor his legacy.

Bennett employees gathered outside to show appreciation to the Sanchez family, Ambassadors and those participating in the convoy by waving American flags as the convoy headed to Americus, Georgia. Watch footage from the convoy and trailer reveal from Bennett’s Facebook page here.

The trucks left McDonough, escorted by the Henry County Sheriff, the Henry County Police along with the Thunder Riders West H.O.G. Chapter through the backroads to Americus, Georgia, and finally stopping at Andersonville National Cemetery to unload.

In 2020, the Bennett Family of Companies and the Taylor Foundation were able to deliver 10,971 wreaths to the cemetery to cover 20,300 gravesites at Andersonville. This past year’s fundraising efforts remained a challenge due to the pandemic, however, with the support of Bennett employees, agents, drivers from across the country and the Henry County business community, it was a blessing to be able to cover every gravesite at Andersonville National Cemetery with a wreath and continue to be a part of National Wreaths Across America Day.

“Our goal each year has been to cover every gravesite at Andersonville with 20,300 wreaths. With the support of our drivers, our employees and the local community, we were able to reach our goal! I’m so grateful for all of the support in helping the cause for Wreaths Across America each year,” said Lee Gentry, Executive Vice President of Bennett Family of Companies and Wreaths Across America captain.

The following morning, for National Wreaths Across America Day, a small ceremony was held that honored all veterans, and especially the fallen who are laid to rest at Andersonville.  Bennett’s Executive Vice President and Wreaths Across America captain, Lee Gentry appeared alongside Andersonville National Cemetery Superintendent, Gia Wagner, to lead a ceremony that honored the 13 service members lost in Afghanistan, all veterans, and especially the fallen who are laid to rest at Andersonville.

It is estimated that over 100 Bennett employees and their families descended on Andersonville to begin laying wreaths on the gravesites along with local supporters. After each wreath was laid by people of all ages, and proper honor and tribute was paid to each soldier laid to rest there, the cemetery was left with a lasting image of respect and tribute to the soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

BHS underwent a rigorous audit by DOE personnel known as the Motor Carrier Evaluation Program (MCEP) and received its satisfactory rating and approval in February of this year. Tier 1 carriers, registered with the Department of Energy, can transport hazardous materials, including radioactive materials and waste that require a Hazardous Materials Safety Permit, or a Hazardous Materials Security Plan.

“We are extremely proud to serve the US Department of Energy (DOE) market as a nationally approved, Tier 1 carrier. In the oil and gas industry, when oil separator fabricators are delayed or oil refineries experience power outages, they often contract someone to help transport these materials by air to ensure a timely delivery. 

In this particular case, a client of Pentagon Freight Services; a global provider of freight forwarding and logistics services in the oil and gas industry, hired Bennett’s Houston Terminal to quickly and safely haul and load multiple pieces of oil separator skids onto an Antonov aircraft to be shipped overseas.

Assembling the Right Team: Pentagon Freight Services & Bennett

Jobs like these don’t come along often. In fact, they’re far from “normal.” Due to the long-standing relationship fostered by Bennett’s inside salesman, Keith Wunsche, Pentagon was already familiar with the quality of service needed for large, complicated transports such as this one. Each driver is TSA certified and possesses H-4 or SL rankings. Bennett’s highly qualified drivers were perfect for this job because they already possessed the qualifications required for the transport.

The first part of the job required us to load up five trucks containing several pieces of the oil separator skids over the course of two days. These pieces came in an array of sizes, with the largest being 30 ft. x 16 ft. x 12 ft. 6 in. The heaviest skid weighed in at 62,000 lbs. making this a pretty massive move. Once the pieces were successfully loaded on to the trucks, we made our way to the Pentagon yard for final preparations. After the pieces were finally prepared and secured, the same pieces were loaded up on to the same five trucks and delivered to a flight service company at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Humble, Texas the next day.

Loading the Antonov & Planning the Routes

We then loaded each piece onto the Antonov, a Ukranian cargo aircraft, to be shipped overseas. As stated above, these pieces would typically be transported via ocean services. However, this particular shipment was expedited due to the immediate needs of the customer. Had these pieces been delivered via ocean, they wouldn’t have arrived for 30-45 days. By transporting the pieces via the Antonov, the pieces were safely on the ground within the next couple of days.

Coordination was key to successfully complete this haul. From tight time constraints to even tighter logistical limitations, it was imperative for everyone to work together as a team to pull this project off. In addition to the high qualifications requirements, drivers were also held to strict time deadlines to arrive at Bush Intercontinental Airport. Additionally, both civilian and police escorts were used due to the width of the pieces. “It was a very tight squeeze getting these pieces onto the cargo plane,” said Chad Gerfers, General Manager of Operations at our Houston Terminal.

All routing and permitting was done by our Houston permit manager, Mike Clepper. Clepper worked to get the drivers some of the best routes available and ensured all permits were processed and returned as quickly as possible. Gerfers admits that the time constraints and requirements of the job were tough, but Bennett’s excellent project team was able to get it done. Overall, “it was a fun, well-coordinated job,” said Chad Gerfers, General Manager of Operations at Bennett’s Houston Terminal.

Michael Ruediger, Project Director with Pentagon Freight Services also commented on teaming up with Bennett for this job saying, “Thanks for the good service. We will do it again next month!”

According to L-3 Technologies, the DeliverySim™ Driving Simulator is an effective, hands-on, training tool for drivers of fleet and light vehicles. The system utilizes short driving simulations and allows participants to gain valuable experience, preparing them for a variety of real-life situations that might occur over the road while behind the wheel. Now, drivers can prepare for various safety critical situations such as dangerous weather and road conditions, difficult terrains, urban deliveries, high traffic, construction zones, and more.

“Yes, this is only a simulator but it is helpful for drivers to experience different scenarios and overcome any challenges before hitting the road,” said Randy Torrence, Safety Manager of Bennett DriveAway RV Division. “With the simulator, we are even able to program scenarios off of a specific safety issue. We can put a driver in that scenario and provide them with a real-life experience, bringing to light safety issues that can arise firsthand and how to successfully navigate them in the future.”

The goal is to integrate the driving simulator within the driver onboarding process for Bennett’s RV Division. During driver orientation drivers must demonstrate satisfactory performance in the completion of several different scenarios on the simulator. The simulator will also provide a high-tech option that will be utilized through periodic and remedial trainings.

They joined truckers who delivered nearly 600 truckloads of wreaths across to 2,100 participating locations throughout the country, all committed to the mission to Remember, Honor and Teach.

After arriving at Bennett’s Home Office headquarters in McDonough, Georgia, the Bennett drivers, Ernest and Roxanna Pounds, Mark and Holly O’Donnell, Darrell and Eileen Carpenter and Fred Lapp were celebrated by executives at the Rolling Ambassador Honor Breakfast. Bennett’s Executive Vice President and Wreaths Across America captain, Lee Gentry appeared alongside Andersonville National Cemetery, Acting Superintendent, Barbara Hatcher and Friends of Andersonville, Ambassador, Robert ‘Chappy’ Kelly to lead a ceremony that honored all veterans, and especially the fallen who are laid to rest at Andersonville.

“It was a very special day,” said Mr. Gentry. “I was overwhelmed by the support of our drivers, our employees and the local community in helping the cause for Wreaths Across America. Seeing nearly all of the gravesites decorated with a wreath and thinking about the sacrifices that each of those soldiers and their families made it truly humbling. I do think that we have helped the mission to Remember, Honor and Teach. I look forward to supporting Wreaths Across America next year with a goal of covering every gravesite at Andersonville with 20,200 wreaths. So many employees have told me that Bennett’s Patriotism Core Value came alive today and they are so excited to continue to be a part of our mission.”

It is estimated that over 100 Bennett employees and their families descended on Andersonville to join a record crowd of local supporters to begin laying wreaths on the gravesites. After each wreath was laid by people of all ages, and proper honor and tribute was paid to each soldier laid to rest there, the cemetery was left with a lasting image of respect and tribute to the soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
